PROJECT SUMMARY

WARRANT is a Horizon Europe Research & Innovation Action that develops a unified methodology and digital platform to enhance the safety, resilience, and cybersecurity of Waterborne Digital Systems (WDS). The project addresses the challenges of modern maritime digitalisation by combining AI - enabled risk analysis, federated data spaces, and real - world validation through four Living Labs. WARRANT supports smarter, greener, and safer shipping aligned with European policy goals.

ABOUT

Challenge

As maritime transport increasingly adopts digital technologies, ensuring the safety, security, and resilience of digital ship systems has become critical. Today’s vessels face threats from complex system integration, cyberattacks, and unpredictable human - AI interactions. A lack of unified standards and assurance processes further hinders the safe deployment of autonomous and connected systems.

Our Solution

WARRANT provides a reference methodology and platform to design, test, and manage dependable Waterborne Digital Systems across their full lifecycle. The project: i. Develops tools for hazard analysis, fault simulation, and real - time risk management. ii. Uses a federated Knowledge Platform with Digital Twins and Waterborne Digital Systems Dataspace. iii. Validates innovations in four Living Labs covering containerships, smart containers, autonomous green vessels, and remote ship operations.

Objectives

  • Design a robust methodology for dependable Waterborne Digital Systems.
  • Develop a digital platform and tools supporting cybersecurity and risk assessment.
  • Demonstrate dependability solutions in four real - world Living Labs.
  • Scale impact through dissemination, standardisation, and policy engagement.

WORK PACKAGES

WP1

- WARRANT Methodology for Dependable Waterborne Digital Systems (WDS) and Smart, Resilient, Open Digital Systems (SRODS)

Leader

DNV

Develops a comprehensive methodology for the lifecycle design and assurance of Waterborne Digital Systems (WDS) and Smart, Resilient, Open Digital Systems (SRODS). It includes hazard and risk analysis, dependability enhancements, intelligent resilience supervision, and integration of HAZOP and Systems Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) techniques, ultimately leading to a consolidated industry - oriented methodology

WP2

- WARRANT Knowledge Platform

Leader

KONNECTA

Implements the software infrastructure to deploy the WARRANT Methodology, enabling federated data/model sharing and AI - powered tools for secure, resilient operations. The platform includes identity management, threat detection, integrity validation, vulnerability analysis, and a Reference Digital Twin - all geared toward improving the dependability of maritime systems.

WP3

- WARRANT Living Lab Ecosystem with All Key Waterborne Digital Systems (WDS) Stakeholders

Leader

NTUA

Deploys and validates WARRANT technologies in four real-world Living Labs covering containerships, smart containers, autonomous green vessels, and remote operation centres. The WP ensures co-creation, system integration, technical verification, and sustainability of LLs beyond the project’s lifetime.

WP3

- Dissemination – Scale-up – Standardisation

Leader

SINTEF Ocean

Focuses on scientific dissemination, stakeholder engagement, innovation exploitation, and contributions to international standardisation. It includes creating a WDS Alliance, policy input to bodies like IMO and EMSA, industry training, and simulations of uptake pathways to ensure broad adoption of WARRANT outputs.

WP3

- Project Management

Leader

Inlecom

Ensures efficient administrative and technical coordination, compliance with EU rules, and delivery quality. It includes risk management, GDPR/data ethics, consortium governance, and coordination across all WPs and stakeholders.
